“Over 30 Seconds Left In The Game/Kill The Clock”
Start the play with the ball in the stick of the fastest and/or most reliable ball carrier, with a second reliable ball handler standing near the bench, threatening to line change (gaining a 10 metre advantage as a potential outlet).
All players on the team with possession of the ball should also be on their wrong floor side (for ball protection purposes) to start, including the player coming off of the bench, which enables them to catch a lead pass while moving across the floor.
The team that needs the “ball back” will usually pull the goalie and start with a double-team on the ball carrier, with all other players locking off their checks.
When the play is whistled in by the referee, the ball carrier will either then run behind the net or try to run past the double-team if they see an opening, otherwise pass to the player coming off of the front door of the bench if they are open (Option #1).
If Option #2 becomes 'wide open' they can also be passed to, and if so, this player must run immediately up-floor before the double-team re-emerges. Otherwise, if they don't get passed to they are at least in position as a safety in case something should go wrong.
If no safe outlet presents itself, the player with the ball should just take the ball into the far-end corner (Option #3), on the opposite side of the floor (with everyone knowing about this option beforehand). The player’s up-floor then have a chance to scrum for the loose ball, or otherwise get back into position on defense. Advanced teams may also have a 4th Option of the player coming out the front door coming back into the bench and sending the original player back onto the floor through the back-door.
