“Under 30 Seconds Left In The Game”
Usually commencing after a time-out, the play starts with the ball in the stick of the fastest and/or most reliable ball carrier (on their wrong floor side), with a second reliable ball handler standing approximately 10 metres from the offensive door of the team with possessions' bench. The remaining 3 players should be in a horizontal line 'stack' (side-boards to side-boards), 5 metres inside their respective rag-line.
The team that needs the “ball back” will usually pull their goalie and start with a double-team on the ball carrier, with all other players locking off their checks. If not, the ball carrier should just run past their check in the open-floor.
When the play is whistled in by the referee, the ball carrier should run behind the net while the player near the offensive door runs back towards the ball-carrier (to clear space for a chaser on that side of the floor). If this player is wide open due to a faulty switch by the defense this pass can be made (Option #2). If this is the case, this player must run immediately up-floor before the double-team re-emerges. Otherwise, the player with the ball should huck the ball toward the opponents goal in an attempt to score on the 'empty net.'
The two players on the outside of the 'stack' should then 'chase' the loose ball into the offensive zone, responsible for their respective corner if the ball carrier misses the shot (Option #1). If there is a scrum for the loose ball, defenders also need to be aware of reverse transition opportunities by the opponent, staying on the defensive side of the ball on 40-60 balls.
The player in the middle of the 'stack' should run back to the middle of the defensive zone, in position as a safety in case something should go wrong. If the opponent obtains possession in their end after the ball gets 'hucked,' players should expect to play the defensive possession as though they are in a Full-Floor Press, with players pressuring the ball and/or playing zone defense where appropriate (read & react).
