Warm-Up Drill #6: “Snake” Shooting

- Demo (1 min): Shooting On-The-Run – "Reach Arms, Rotate Hips & Shoulders, Follow Through"

- Begin in one end of the floor, with lines of lefts and rights on their proper floor side.
The first player in one of the lines leads a group toward the net, either lefts or rights, with one group going then the other. The next player in line goes after the player in front is approximately 5 metres (1-2 seconds) ahead. Another option is to send players in groups of 3 (high, mid & low shot), or 1 player at a time; alternating sides each rep.
Make sure players hit the goalie in the chest or leg pads on the first couple of shots (see goalie warm-up). After that, players can work on their accuracy, shooting "around the pipes" and picking corners.
*Variation #1 (7 min): "High Variations." Start with lines of players near where the rag line meets the inside lane (Variation #1A), or in the outside lane wide of the shooter position (Variation #1B).
In Variation #1A, shots should be taken on-the-run while moving from north-south in orientation. In Variation #1B, shots should be taken "on the run" while “sweeping” east-west in orientation. Each group should go twice from each of these 2 spots, which allows for two goalies to get shots from each area. Both high variations should have players shooting from a relatively far distance away based on their age; use a pylon as a marker if necessary.
The "snake" can happen both on-ball (as shown in diagram), or off-ball, with the opposite-side feeding them passes (not shown in diagram). It is also possible to send passes to the person in front of you in the "snake" line (outside lane or inside lane), which emulates a pick & roll scenario.
Assistant coaches should collect balls to help “reload” the players after each time through the drill. Players on the opposite side of the floor can also help out with this process as well.
*Variation #2 (7 min): "Low Variations." Same as the above variations except start with lines at the mid-boards (Variation #2A) or at/near where GLE meets the side-boards (Variation #2B). In Variation #2A, players should sweep east-west through the middle and take a shot-on-the-run, and in Variation #2B players "crease walk" east-west across the front of the net.
Coaches can place a stick on the floor as a marker if players are shooting from their wrong floor side (crossing the "imaginary line"). Coaches should also deter players from throwing fake series', which can disrupt the flow of the drill.
*Variation #3 (7 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, losing team does push-ups, sit-ups, body weight squats, sprints, etc.
*Variation #4 (7 min): "Corner Specific Shots." Any of the above variations can also be done with the coach telling the goalie and/or players which corner the players will be shooting at prior to starting the drill, or between reps. Coaches also have the option to tell a few players in line to mix it up (unbeknownst to the goaltender).
*Variation #5 (7 min): "Mix Up Release Points." Instruct players to take a certain type of shot (without letting the goalies know) whether overhand, side-arm, underhand or bounce shots.
*Variation #6 (7 min): "Rebounds Off Goalie." Another variation for after players shoot is for individual players to practice corralling rebounds off of the goalie, which is a game-specific skill that is hard to replicate.
*Most common error = not rotating hips/shoulders (trunk) for power, using mostly arms instead.
*For all drill variations after a player shoots they should “react back,” sprinting the length of the floor (collecting a loose ball along the way if possible), and then line up in the same formation in the opposite end of the floor; or just sprint to the rag-line (lining up in the same end again).
